Conference Information

The University of Idaho and Washington State University are proud to host the Fall Meeting of the Physical Plant Crafts Association on Thursday and Friday, November 8-9, 2001.  We would like to cordially invite all interested trade persons, supervisors/managers, and superintendents to attend.

Since its inception in 1988, the Physical Plant Craft Association (PPCA) has sponsored conferences each spring, summer and fall.  Every PPCA conference is organized and hosted by one of our 32 member institutions throughout the West and Midwest.  Each conference is uniquely designed to share common experiences and provide hands-on training.

Our November conference in Pullman and Moscow is a chance to get away from the daily routines and to explore our campuses, which are located a short 8 miles apart.  Conference attendees become a part of a national network of facilities employees who are just a phone call or e-mail away.  We have two full days of classes that should be of interest to anyone who would like to attend.

Persons attending should make their air arrangements in and out of Spokane, Washington, located 80 miles to the northwest from us.  They have rental cars available at the airport to make the 1 ½ hour drive to Moscow.  The University Inn Best Western in Moscow has a block of rooms reserved for our conference.  Please call (800) 325-8765 or register through their website at www.uinnmoscow.com.  Please mention PPCA when making reservations.  They have quoted us a price of $69.50 per night for single or double occupancy.  We will provide shuttle services to and from the hotel on both days of our conference

Registration is $39.95 per person; the cost goes toward two full meals (lunch each day), continental breakfasts, shop and campus tours, and conference supplies.  Please return the registration form by October 26, 2001.

We look forward to hosting the PPCA conference and the opportunity to show off our campuses.  If you have any questions or comments about this conference, you may reach me (Alan Odenborg) by e-mail   alano@uidaho.edu.

Course Descriptions

Hearing Conservation

This training is intended for employees, and those who directly supervise employees, whose job activities may cause them to be exposed to hazardous noise levels.  In addition to a discussion of the elements of a hearing conservation program, employees are provided information they can use to identify areas where hazardous noise levels might be present as well as the procedures and equipment that must be used to prevent hearing loss when working in these areas.

Presenters:            Holly Gates-Mayer, Industrial Hygienist, UI Environmental Health & Safety

George Porter, Occupational Safety Specialist, UI Environmental Health & Safety

Incorporating Safety Training into Job Descriptions

During the past year, a pilot-project to establish a practical method for systematically determining and tracking the completion of appropriate, basic safety training for each job title was initiated in UI Facilities by Environmental Health & Safety.  This presentation will include a discussion of the rationale for the approach used as well as an explanation of how the checklists and other materials can be used to facilitate and document the safety training identification/tracking process.

Presenter:              George Porter, Occupational Safety Specialist, UI Environmental Health & Safety

Asbestos & Lead Awareness

Until its potential for causing serious health problems was identified, asbestos was routinely used in the construction of buildings, personal protective equipment, brake linings and other applications because of its fire retardant and insulation properties.  Lead in paint and other materials can pose a serious health hazard if these materials are not handled and disposed of properly.  This training is intended for employees working in the building trades, maintenance, custodial, or other job occupations where work activities could result in the disturbance of materials that might contain asbestos or lead, and those who directly supervise their activities.  Topics discussed will include the hazards asbestos or lead containing materials may pose if disturbed, identifying suspect materials, and safe work-practices and procedures that must be followed when performing related job tasks for workers to protect themselves and others from harm.

Presenter:              Dennis Auslam, Asbestos Program Coordinator, UI Environmental Health & Safety

Student Recreation Center

Tour of the WSU Student Recreation Center conducted by facility maintenance supervisor.  Highlights include maintenance requirements for seven basketball courts, roller blade court, 1/8th mile elevated indoor running

track, swimming pool/spa, glass enclosed handball/racket ball courts, building environmental control monitoring system and ancillary facilities.

Presenter:              WSU Personnel

Operations of Central Control Monitoring System (CCMS): Information Technology Building

The CCMS for WSU provides control oversight of environmental conditions and associated equipment operation for over 90 buildings on campus.  Discussion and demonstration of the features of our AAPOGEE system will be presented by Siemens contract representatives and WSU personnel.  Extensive system graphics including the chilled water storage and distribution system, building HVAC operational systems and alarm response to more than 28,000

sensing points and other capabilities and features of our insight program will be demonstrated.

Presenter:              Siemens and WSU Personnel

Procurement of Carpet at Higher Education Facilities

This workshop is to discuss the carpet purchasing programs at USU and UI directly from the manufacturer. Topics discussed will be:  direct purchasing; state bid process; university bid process; university spec preparation; environmental issues; installation guidelines-ownership, moisture test; end user-ownership questions; what purchasing directly from the mills means-stretching the dollar and better material.

Presenters:            DeVar Clegg, Utah State University; Steve Brownlee, Shaw Industries;

Carol McAleer Hites, University of Ida
