Stanford University Facts in Brief
Stanford University is located in the foothills of the San Francisco peninsula. Enrollment in 1998 totaled 14,084, of whom 6,591 were undergraduates and 7,553 were graduate students. The 1,606 freshmen entering in the fall of 1998 were selected from 18,885 applicants. Eighty-seven percent of those offered admission were in the top 10 percent of their high school class. Almost half held straight-A records, and almost all (99.8 percent) held a grade-point average of 3.0 and above. Stanford awarded 4,437 degrees in 1992-93, of which 1,730 were baccalaureate and 2,707 were advanced degrees. The University includes the Schools of Business, Earth Sciences, Education, Engineering, Humanities and Sciences, Law, and Medicine, as well as numerous centers, institutes, programs and laboratories.
Among the 1,455 faculty, there are 12 Nobel laureates, 108 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 191 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 69 members of the National Academy of Engineering, 19 members of the National Academy of Education, 20 winners of the National Medal of Science, 35 members of the American Philosophical Society, 4 Pulitzer Prize winners, and 14 MacArthur Prize winners.
Stanford promotes excellence in both academics and athletics. For freshmen entering in 1992, the graduation rate was 90 percent within five years for all undergraduates and 93 percent for varsity athletes. Stanford has won the Sears Directors Cup, which honors the all-around champion in NCAA Division I sports, the last four years. In 199798, mens cross country, womens volleyball, mens and womens swimming and diving, synchronized swimming and mens tennis all won NCAA championships.
The Department of Athletics offers 33 varsity sports17 for women, 15 for men and one coedplus 19 club sports. In addition, more than 9,000 students, faculty and staff participate each year in one of 37 intramural sports. Each quarter, approximately 2,000 students enroll in 85 physical education courses, which include 20 different activities.
The Building Maintenance Shops are a core component of Facilities Operations. The shops deliver a range of services to the University including emergency response, routine maintenance, repairs and minor alterations to academic, research, library and special University facilities. The department is comprised of eight trade shops (Carpentry/Lock, Electric, Fire Protection, Garage, HVAC, Painting, Plumbing, and Preventive Maintenance) which are responsible for maintaining over seven million square feet of building space and 700 University vehicles and small equipment. The craft shops function as the stewards of the University building systems. No one knows the buildings and systems better than the individuals that provide service to them daily.
The department's professional standards apply to quality work processes and promote professional working relationships with the Stanford community. The shop workers and supervisors are committed to providing quality service and support to the campus environment in a cost effective manner to:
- Meet academic and research program needs of the students, faculty and administrative staff.
- Preserve the University's physical resources.
- Help assure the safety and well-being of all who use campus facilities.
Exit Sand Hill Road east toward Stanford. Continue east, turning right at the traffic light on Santa Cruz Avenue. Make an immediate left onto Junipero Serra Boulevard. Turn left at the second stoplight, Campus Drive East. Continue around Campus Drive East, when you reach the gas station, youve only got two more stop signs to go through. Just past the stop sign at Galvez, enter the dirt lot on the Campus Drive side. Parking there will be free if you display the enclosed notice on your dashboard. We will have a shuttle pick you up (on the half-hour) and deliver you to the registration area. If you intend to park elsewhere, there is a $2.00 parking fee per day.
From either (SFO or SJO) Airport you can easily rent a car (prior reservations are STRONGLY recommended) or a Cal Train shuttle is available to transport you free to the Cal-train station for a short commuter train ride to Palo Alto (cost is about $5.00). If youre staying at the Sheraton, disembark the train at the Palo Alto Station (you can walk across the parking lot to the hotel). Well have the Stanford Marguerite Shuttle take you right into campus for the mornings events (if youre driving, see maps at the end of this mailing). Well pick you up from either the Sheraton or The Creekside hotel. If youre staying elsewhere, please let us know where and if you need transportation, well make every effort to get you on campus. The drive from either airport is a leisurely 45 minutes or less (depending on what time you arrive of course, this IS California). Taxis and Limos are available as well, but will be a bit pricey.
Weather and Clothing
California weather during November should be pleasant during the day, showers are not uncommon so bring an umbrella and the evenings are a bit on the brisk side (but still above 50). Shorts and comfortable attire is also recommended.
Recreation
San Francisco Pacific Ocean Silicon Valley do we need to say anymore? We will have brochures available for the surrounding area and Northern California for your perusal.

Please refer to your final agenda registration (pick it up at the check-in desk on the morning of November 4th) for classroom locations.
